Before home networks, telephone companies provided a system to support voice communication.  Fax products and limited bandwidth access to the Internet also possible using primitive telephone cable.  Most telephone companies have fiber optic networks that circle the planet and will support multiple types of high bandwidth communication.  Home networks may use these same capabilities or may require even greater bandwidth for ultra high-speed communications.
