Industry Description

Traditional telephones provide basic functions perfected over decades of continual improvement.  In the future, home network-compatible wired handsets and base units, wireless satellite units, and cellular phones can expand the role of the telephone.

It may be possible, in the future, for all of these devices to be extensions of the home network acting like the “old-fashioned” operator who could be summoned by tapping the cradle button several times (this action sent a clicking sound across the telephone circuits and could be heard by the operator).  When your home network responds, you could ask it to transfer the call, check family schedules for conflicts, or recover some piece of information stored within the network’s database.
