Industry Description

People in homes and businesses may become more sensitive to the rate of consumption of electrical energy supplied by utility companies.  They may also wish to monitor energy-producing systems at their home or business locations.

If utility companies set limits for power consumption, such monitoring may help prevent rolling blackouts or other curtailment of services.  In the past, energy-saving devices have been automatic and their use transparent to consumers, such as radio-controlled cutoff switches for hot water tanks.

In the future, home networks may provide intelligent means of interaction. Where monitoring devices are located, the range of service for wireless components, and respective connectivity and communications protocols may all be configured for each monitoring application.
