Most comprehensive security panels have an assortment of both intrusion and fire options.  These are passive systems that only go to an alarm status when an event — break-in, motion past a sensor, heat rise, smoke, or fire — causes the panel to react.  Home networks may be able to add additional capabilities to home security. Home networks may be able to add extra coverage by being aware of situations that lead to fires.  Sensors in appliances that detect unusual levels of heat or electrical current can help schedule repair calls; if left unattended, these indicators may lead to appliance failure and/or fire.
