Industry Description

Two expressions used to describe advanced computers with reasoning ability are Computer-Based Intelligence (CBI) or Artificial Intelligence (AI).  Every intelligent computer may also have abilities to interact with its environment.  Each may have sentience — levels of consciousness and an ability to be aware of and interact with its environment.  Each may also be heuristic — abilities to learn from experience, potentially to make better choices, and possibly to initiate new projects to expand its knowledge into areas where gaps or deficiencies previously existed.

Beyond heuristic and sentient properties, computers may be self-evolving — having abilities to improve itself by adding new hardware circuitry, reprogramming parts of itself to function better, and interacting with other intelligent computers to learn more about its potential and that of other intelligent systems.  In the future, how we learn to live with and constructively apply these computers will help to shape our world.  How we view our responsibilities for creating, controlling, and empowering such computers may be pivotal to the  future of Humanity.
