[ 238210 ] = Electrical Contractors and other wiring installation contractors — Security and fire system, installation only

Industry Description

Security system wiring work requires an understanding of how systems work, low voltage circuits, power supplies and storage batteries, normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) circuits, and central station applications.

These electricians may not be licensed electricians as much as they are security specialists.  They need to know how to walk test a completed installation and the importance of proper grounding and avoidance of random static discharges near security panels.

Special applications may involve processing of forms and registering security systems in cities that require it; glass breakage systems and correct installation of glass break sensors; motion detectors and selection of suitable devices for each situation; heat rise sensor placement; magnetic contact characteristics; applying various accessories to provide desired security performance (i.e., placement of magnets on doors at the extreme limits of reed switches to cause alarm state when doors are even slightly opened).  All security system installations are governed by National Electric Code (NEC) and local construction code requirements.
