At this time, security panels are digital, receive input from wired and/or wireless peripherals including magnetic contact blocks; smoke, fire, heat rise, and CO detectors; motion sensors, glass breakage subsystems, and other specialty equipment.  Remote access via cell phones and other portable devices is becoming more common. 

Systems status, arming and disarming are also common.  Security panels dial central station offices which alert fire and police agencies as needed.  Most panels have programmed (hard wired) capabilities which cannot be altered.  In the future, panels that are compatible with home networks may have much more flexibility with expanded capabilities of the network.
